This is future fiction but it seems to me in some ways very close! It involves an environment in which information is always and instantly available (the internet no longer needs an external technology but feeds directly into the brain) but as the ease of information access has gone up, the value placed on it has gone down. Schools no longer exist, on the theory that since anything you want to know is readily available anyway, they are unnecessary, and the young people have no structure, no purpose and no interest in anything.
